There's no randomness at all. If you've got a targeting computer, even that restriction becomes moot. Unless you willingly charge in to combat, this can easily reduce a mission to a protracted bout of sniping.
Adding even a touch of randomness perhaps weighted according to the laser's nominal range would make combat much more exciting, forcing the player to close with the enemy more often, and call in help from the all-too-often idle lancemates.
Another design flaw in the game is the implementation of the cooling bonus for standing in water. Although the board-game has rules for an slightly increased rate of cooling when your Mech is standing in water, MechWarrior 3 appears to triple the rate, regardless of how shallow the water is.
This means that it's all too easy to load your Mech up with lasers, plop it in some water and blaze away, oblivious to your heat build-up.
This 'feature' excessively increases the effectiveness of the larger energy weapons, whose only real penalty otherwise is their prodigious heat output. The only other problem I had with this game actually serves to highlight these problems. Throughout the campaign, enemy Mechs remained unresponsive to being shot at. Within a certain range, they would turn around and close with you, but too often you could plink away at a Mech patrolling m away and it would happily walk back and forth until its leg disappeared out from under it.
This reluctance to switch from 'patrol' to 'engage' took some of the shine off the campaign mode. These flaws could easily be fixed in a patch, and if they ever get addressed, this game would be a gold medal contender for certain. Having said that, MechWarrior 3 is an otherwise flawlessly realised game, and if you've enjoyed any other mecha simulation, you'll love it--warts and all. Screenshots from MobyGames. If you use the no-cd fix you'll get no soundtrack because the game apparently reads the disk like it would a music CD.

I highly recommend this game and playing it for the first time. Just be warned that this game is slow paced, so if that's not your cup of tea, than I suggest that you download something else off of My Abandonware or buying a game off of GOG and Steam.
Oh, and although the first expansion Ghost Bear's Legacy is rather dire, the second expansion MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries is just as awesome and is also recommended.

It's a little tricky to get the patch installed. It deletes the old versions of files, copies the new ones in, but they all end up named things like mech2. Mw1 its great game for its time, but shitty for todays standards. Mw3 had annoying sound acting, shitty plot, i hated the idea of main charater, and AI was stupid, and they tried to fix it with adding more enemies. MW4 was a fucking joke. Plot was even worse than mw3, acting also. Also the plot was horrible cliche, that faggot looking prince avenging his family. Gameplay was too action based, unlike mw2 where you need to use some tactics.
Also game encourages you to play with third person view, that was horrible. Mercenaries expansion for mw4 was almost playable, but it was still mw4, with stupid voice acting and gameplay, mw2 mercenaries beats it.

FOMO 0 point. I really liked the video cutscenes at the start of the games and the music was great in all of the games too. Sort of indutrial rock vibe to it all and when it was kicking off the music really added to all the action happening around you. Quality voice acting too and variety in the missions which were also quite long with objectives suddenly changing as things happened within the game.
In fact has everything the current Mechwarrior 5 is missing now.. MW5 plays way too much like it's online cousin and much of what made the MW great seems to be missin gin the latest game. This site is great downloaded mechwarrior 4 mercenaries unzipped and installed on my Predator gaming computer had alittle trouble with it being larg we than the screen did a restart and it started perfect.
